The 76 millimetre anti tank gun

The Russian made gun was used by the North Korean Army during the Korean War.  It could fire both anti tank rounds and high explosive rounds.  It needed a crew of seven to operate it.  It had been heavily used by the Soviet Red Army during the Second World War.  The picture below is of a 76 millimetre gun captured during the Inchon landings.

American M2 60 millimetre mortar

This mortar was used at Company level to support the infantry.  It weighed 42 pounds and could fire three pound shells up to a range of 1,800 metres.  It was widely used during the Second World War, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.  During the Korean War it was used by both the American and South Korean Armies.

FM 23 Chinese Grenade

The Grenade is very useful weapon in night fighting and patrol action, it does not reveal the location of the man who throw it and can be deadly at close range.  The Chinese FM 23 Grenade had a ring pull cord which meant that when throw it would explode three seconds latter.  It could have a killing radius of up to 10 metres.

Korean War Podcast is now five months old —

Korean War Podcast is now five months old

The podcast grows in terms of downloads month by month, with many new listeners joining us.  The total number of episodes for the Podcast series is likely to be 68.  The podcast series will end on Saturday 18th December 2016, just in time for Christmas, it will continue to be published weekly until then, I am currently writing the text for episode 57 so I am very confident of that.  There will be at least one episode will be for listeners questions about the Korean War, I will tell you how you may submit them nearer the time.

Bell H13 Sioux helicopter

Used by the American Army, it was a twin bladed, single engine helicopter.  It had seats for three crew, it was used in observation role.  However it could be used in medical evacuations with two panniers, one above each skid to carry back wounded soldiers from the front line back to medical field hospitals.  Greatly reducing the time taken if carried back by hand over the rough terrain of Korea.

The Battle for Cloverleaf Hill

The defence of the Naktong River by the American 24th Division which is attacked by the North Korean 4th Division.  The North Koreans seize Cloverleaf Hill and the Obong ridge.  Early American attempts to retake the hill are unsuccessful, but with the help of the Marine, they finally regain them.  A biography of Major General Lee, commander of the North Korean 4th Division.

The Douglas B26 Bomber

The B26 was developed during the Second World War.  In 1950 it flew out from Japan on bombing runs in Korea but from 1951 they flew from Korean airfields.  During the Korean War it is claimed that they destroyed over 38,000 enemy trucks and cars, 406 trains and even seven enemy planes on the ground.  The plane needed a crew of three.  It had a range of 2,300 kilometres and a speed of 570 kilometres an hour.  It could carry up to 2,700 kilograms of bombs.

M1 Garand Rifle

This was the standard infantry rifle for both the American and South Korean Armies.  It fired a .3 inch bullet and it effective range was about 450 metre.  It was a semi automatic weapon.  It was feed by an eight round clip.  It cost about $85 to produce at the time.
